We Are in a Remarkable Era for Mammoplasty

It’s true, and one area that has improved tremendously in the last thirty years is breast surgery. For example, if a woman was diagnosed with breast cancer in the 1980’s, she typically experienced a radical mastectomy, removing the entire breast and lymph nodes.

It took time for the medical community to begin removing only some tissue around the tumor. They believed the risk of breast cancer returning was too high. Post-surgery, a female patient’s quality of life didn’t receive much attention from medical providers either. She was alive, and that’s all that mattered. She had to figure out how to live with a scarred chest and possibly abnormal-looking breasts.

Today, the surgical option for breast cancer is called ‘breast conserving surgery’ or BCS. This is now the norm for early-stage cancer. Between radiation and small tumor extraction, a woman may still be able to keep her breasts. But this depends on the diagnosis and the doctor’s assessment of the best course for the patient. And if a woman wants to have the breasts she feels best with, today’s cosmetic surgeons provide more natural results than in the past.

But cancer isn’t the only reason a woman may want to augment her breasts. Maybe she’s dealing with an aesthetic imbalance where one breast is larger than the other. Or she could be suffering from back and spinal pain from carrying around abnormally large breasts (the medical term is macromastia). In the past, cosmetic surgery wasn’t responsive to these problems, and women basically had to live with it. And this is why Dr. Ourian is a cosmetic surgeon who loves what he does: giving patients the best surgical outcomes so they can live their lives comfortably and confidently.

Mammoplasty is One Word That Means Many Things

Mammoplasty is a term used for changing the position, shape, or size of the breasts. Yet it is not connected to only one type of breast surgery. And it can be tailored to meet each patient’s desires in a way that wasn’t possible even 20 years ago.

There are several options for mammoplasty in Beverly Hills:

Breast reduction: Women with macromastia can have their breasts reduced to relieve back pain. Mammoplasty reduction is a more sophisticated term for the same procedure.

Breast augmentation: This type of cosmetic surgery can address lopsided breasts or an aesthetic imbalance in a woman’s figure.

Breast reconstruction: Women can still receive radical mastectomies. Reconstructing the breasts can include stretching the skin and creating new areolas to give a woman back natural-looking breasts.

Breast enlargement: Some women may be flat-chested due to genetics. Or may just want to go up a cup size or two.

Today’s technology does more than offer various options. Smaller, more precise tools can provide less scarring. And 3D images show patients before-and-after cosmetic surgery images. Cosmetic surgeon Dr. Arial Ourian walks each patient through the mammoplasty process in Beverly Hills. After a comprehensive assessment and consideration of the patient’s needs, he will develop a surgical plan. Then there will be another meeting so he can show the female patient how her breasts are expected to look after recovery.
